It’s true that many writers and bloggers stand in the way of their own success. It’s fine to put an article together which is well-written and well-researched. However, this article (which took you a long time to write) may never be read by anyone else. Why? If your article isn’t set out correctly for Internet consumption it may not look attractive enough for anyone to bother reading it. You may be thinking, surely – this is frivolous. Why would anyone care about the structure of the article if the message is right. The truth is, web users are busy people. They want information they can see at a glance. You almost have to woo them to your work.
Here’s how to properly structure an online article
Have a short, clear title that isn’t misleading
If you write on the web, titles are the very things that will bring traffic to your site. If you want to write about how to use a voice activated app, then say exactly that. Don’t go the route of fancy and meaningless. Think short, think precise and think traffic. What phrase would you type into your search engine when looking for iPhone apps for writers? Give your article that very name. Remember that the shorter your title, the better. There’s less of a chance that part of it will be cut off by search engines.
Your introduction has to be informative and succinct
Don’t go for ‘clever’ ways of concealing your big reveal. Tell your audience what your article is about. Show them how it will help them and give them exactly what they need. Your introduction need not be long and drawn-out. It should include the nucleus of the points you’ll raise in the rest of the article.
Your points should be clearly divided and categorised
No matter how glowing your prose is, how flowery your language or how well your descriptive phrases are, Internet users still may not read your work. Web readers are mainly interested in: getting information, being entertained, or being instructed. A potential reader needs to clearly see your points within seconds of viewing the article. If they can’t they may very well click away. You can structure your points in several different ways to achieve this aspect of article writing:
- Divide separate sections with bolded headings that say exactly what the parts include
- Bullet point your important points so that they can easily be scanned – even from a small mobile (cell) phone screen.
- Use numbering instead of bulleting.
- These elements make your article look shorter and give information clearly and more effectively.
Deliver what you promised
You have a descriptive introduction. You’ve sectioned your article so it’s easy to read, and be scanned. You’ve got bolded headings with bulleted points. Now what? This is all good, but if you haven’t delivered what you said you would in title and introduction you’ll lose that reader forever. Say what you mean in the title. Say what you’re going to do in the intro, then do exactly that in the body of your article. Say your piece clearly, correctly, and in the most helpful way possible, then move out!
Your conclusion
You need a short conclusion. Summarise the principles you tackled in your article. Show the reader how following what you said would help them, improve their lives etc. Provide a call-to action.
Now go write your well-structured web article. You already have the knowledge and capability, and now you know the formatting and structure. Follow this and all your Internet articles will be much easier to write.
